Why Are Tooth Extractions Necessary?

Tooth removal may be necessary for severely decayed, broken, or infected teeth, or those damaged due to periodontal (gum) disease. It may also be needed as a part of orthodontic treatment if you have a crowded mouth, to make room for the remaining teeth to shift into alignment.

Wisdom teeth, also known as the third molars, are commonly extracted if they have cavities or if they are impacted, or trapped in the jaw. They often come in at a wrong angle, pushing against other teeth, or your mouth may not have sufficient room to accommodate them. We may recommend wisdom teeth removal if your third molars have the potential of causing problems down the road.

Types of Extractions

The main types of extractions are simple and surgical. A simple extraction is performed on readily accessible teeth. Surgical extraction, on the other hand, is needed for weak or impacted teeth, or those that are fractured at the gum line. With today’s advances in dental technology, as well as our sedation dentistry options, most patients experience minimal pain or discomfort.

After Tooth Extraction

Refrain from forceful spitting, drinking through a straw, or smoking to avoid dislodging the clot forming in the tooth socket. Otherwise, you may develop a very painful condition called dry socket, which will need treatment at our office.
