A crown, or cap, is a dental restoration that encases the visible portion of a tooth. Besides strengthening and preserving a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve a tooth’s shape, alignment, or appearance. Crowns can also restore missing teeth by covering implants or securing dental bridges in place.
We may recommend a dental crown for a tooth with a large filling and insufficient tooth structure remaining, to restore a weak or cracked tooth, to preserve a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment, or to cover a discolored or poorly shaped tooth. Porcelain, ceramic, or composite crowns can be closely matched to your natural teeth, delivering beautiful results.
What Is a Dental Bridge?
A bridge is a restoration that covers the space left by one or more missing teeth. It is made up of replacement teeth known as pontics that are secured to crowns placed on natural teeth or dental implants on both sides of the gap.
It’s important to restore your missing teeth to prevent the remaining teeth from shifting into the empty space, which can result in a bad bite. Gaps left by missing teeth can also cause an imbalance that puts you at a higher risk of developing periodontal (gum) disease and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
